Ukrainian Studies Distinguished Award for the Competence Network for Interdisciplinary Ukrainian Studies Frankfurt (Oder)–Berlin

European University Viadrina has received the Ukrainian Studies Distinguished Award for its Competence Network for Interdisciplinary Ukrainian Studies Frankfurt (Oder)–Berlin (KIU). Presented for the first time, the award by the Global Coalition for Ukrainian Studies recognizes the establishment of the network and its interdisciplinary approach to advancing Ukrainian Studies.

photo_2026-07-09_15-58-41On 8 July 2026, the European University Viadrina was awarded with the Ukrainian Studies Distinguished Award by the Global Coalition for Ukrainian Studies for Competence Network for Interdisciplinary Ukrainian Studies Frankfurt (Oder)–Berlin (KIU). The award ceremony took place during the opening of the international conference Ukrainian Studies in the World at the Lviv National Opera in Ukraine. Dr. Susann Worschech, KIU Project Coordinator, accepted the award on behalf of the network.

The award was presented for the first time in 2026. It honors international universities, research institutions, partner organizations, and scholars who have made outstanding contributions to the development of Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar Studies worldwide.

European University Viadrina received the award in the category ‘Ukrainian Studies: Interdisciplinary Approach’ for establishing and developing the Competence Network for Interdisciplinary Ukrainian Studies (KIU). The Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta was also honored for its longstanding interdisciplinary contribution to the advancement of Ukrainian Studies in North America.

The Global Coalition for Ukrainian Studies is an initiative of Ukraine's Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It brings together more than 70 universities and academic institutions worldwide. The Coalition aims to strengthen international scholarship on Ukraine and to foster cooperation and exchange among researchers and academic institutions.
