New publication: Ukraine Research in Germany: Failures and New Opportunities, Susann Worschech
Susann Worschech, scientific coordinator of the KIU – Competence Network for Interdisciplinary Ukraine Studies, describes in the text, published in the “Forum for International Cultural Relations,” the think tank journal of the ifa – Institut für Auslandsbeziehungenhow the decades-long neglect of Ukraine in both social debates and academic discourse came about. For a long time, Ukraine remained a blind spot in Germany – overlooked, underestimated, misunderstood. Russia’s war of aggression beginning in 2022 brought belated attention and revealed: what is needed at last is structured, visible, and sustainably funded Ukraine research. For a year now, alongside the KIU, another Ukraine center, the Denkraum Ukraine (Regensburg), has been in development in Germany. Worschech describes both the evolution and the current state of academic Ukraine studies, as well as the growing demand for Ukraine expertise in Germany.
