Call for Papers | Interdisciplinary Conference ‘Transitional Justice beyond the rule-based world order: Interdisciplinary perspectives on peace and justice’

European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) and the National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy invite scholars and practitioners to submit abstracts for an international interdisciplinary conference on Transitional Justice, taking place on 1–2 December 2026 in Frankfurt (Oder). The conference will explore how societies address grave human rights violations, rebuild institutions, restore trust, and pursue peace and justice amid shifting global orders and new forms of conflict. | Submission deadline: 15 June 2026.

Processes of political transition following armed conflict, authoritarian rule, and mass atrocities have become an increasingly ambiguous and conflictual global challenge. In particular, as the international order is eroding and the number of interstate wars is increasing again, practical and paradigmatic shifts question established formats of conflict resolution and rebuilding state societies. While the role of international organisations is put increasingly into question, it has become more challenging for today’s societies to deal with the complex task of addressing grave human rights violations, rebuilding institutions, restoring trust, and laying the foundations for a peaceful and democratic future. Transitional Justice has therefore evolved into a dynamic and increasingly important interdisciplinary field at the intersection of law, political science, sociology, history, and peace and conflict studies.

European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) and the National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy are pleased to invite submissions for an international interdisciplinary conference on Transitional Justice, to be held on 01 and 02 December 2026 in Frankfurt (Oder).

The conference aims to foster the establishment of interdisciplinary approaches to Transitional Justice and therefore to bring together scholars and practitioners from different disciplines and regions to discuss current challenges, theoretical developments, and practical experiences in the field of Transitional Justice.

We explicitly encourage submissions from different academic disciplines (law, political science, sociology, history, cultural studies, peace and conflict studies, and related fields) as well as from practitioners working in international organizations, NGOs, public administration, or international justice institutions.

We warmly invite scholars and practitioners who wish to contribute to this dialogue to submit an abstract of no more than 300 words outlining their proposed presentation by 15 June 2026 to transitional-justice@europa-uni.de. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by 10 July 2026. All presenters will be invited to transform their presentation into a paper to be published in an edited conference volume following the event. Travel and accommodation costs for accepted speakers will be fully covered by the organizers.

We very much look forward to your submissions and to welcoming you to Frankfurt (Oder) for an inspiring and engaging exchange on Transitional Justice!
