New Publication Presentation: Introduction to Ukrainian Studies at 6 P.M. at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Unter den Linden 6, 10117 Berlin, Hörsaal 2094. Join for a event, where Prof. Dr. Andrii Portnov will present his newly published introduction to Ukrainian Studies. This essential work offers fresh insights into Ukraine’s history, culture, and current challenges — an important contribution in today’s geopolitical context.

Historian Prof. Dr. Andrii Portnov presents international research findings in his newly published book from Nomos Verlag, weaving them together with his own academic and teaching experiences gathered across Europe. With Ukrainian Studies, he addresses not only teachers and students, but also journalists and policymakers.

"In general, it’s a book for anyone interested in Eastern Europe. Of course, I hope that those already somewhat (or very) familiar with Eastern European topics will also find some unexpected perspectives and approaches," says Prof. Dr. Portnov about his target audience.

His aim is to offer a compact and interdisciplinary overview of Ukraine. What sets the book apart is his unique approach: examining Ukraine’s history and present from a transnational perspective, highlighting, among other things, the interrelations in Ukrainian-Polish, Ukrainian-Russian, and Ukrainian-German relations.
"I believe the history of every country — especially one as large as Ukraine — can only be told transnationally. The history of every culture, every language, is a history of contact, mutual influence, conflict, and the search for solutions," says Portnov.
