KIU research project: Violence and political preferences in Ukraine during the full-scale war
This KIU Sur-Place fellowship will support a continuation of a project with Dr Theocharis N. Grigoriadis from Freie Universität Berlin on changes in political preferences of Ukrainians after experiencing war-related violence. In the project, new data from 2,000 Ukrainians was collected through the Omnibus survey conducted by Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS). Preliminary results indicate that war violence (brought about by russia) does not significantly affect voter turnout. However, personal loss or severe hardship from the conflict reduces support for unconditional peace talks and increases backing for military solutions. These preliminary results of the study have been presented at KIU seminar and published as ZOiS Spotlight. In the second phase of the project, Maksym, together with his academic host, will work on obtaining causal estimates for a publishable academic article.
